As we move beyond childhood and youth, Allah opens before us a new stage of life. We are no longer simply children discovering the world. We begin to seek our place within it, to acquire knowledge, to work, to earn a living, to make decisions, and to carry responsibilities.
Yet behind every ability we develop and every opportunity we receive are countless blessings from Allah.
The Blessing of Knowledge
One of the greatest blessings Allah gives a person is the ability to learn.
We learn from teachers, books, parents, other people, experiences, successes, failures, and the world around us. We learn how to read and write, how to understand, how to communicate, how to solve problems, and how to make decisions.
The ability to think, remember, understand, compare, analyze, and learn is itself a tremendous blessing.
We often use our minds without thinking about the One who gave us the ability to use them.
Every book we open, every lesson we understand, every skill we acquire, and every new idea we discover reminds us that knowledge is a gift from Allah.
Knowledge can open doors that were previously invisible to us. It can help us distinguish between what is beneficial and what is harmful, between what is right and what is wrong, and between a wise decision and a careless one.
But knowledge is not merely a means of achieving success in this world. It can also become a means of recognizing the greatness of the One who created us.
The Blessing of Work
Then comes another important stage: the ability to work.
Allah gives us a body that can move, hands that can produce, eyes that can see, ears that can hear, a tongue that can speak, and a mind that can think and plan.
With these blessings, a person can work, produce, earn, serve others, solve problems, build things, teach, create, and contribute to society.
Some people work with their hands. Others work with their minds. Some teach, some build, some transport goods, some treat the sick, some manage businesses, and others provide countless services that people depend upon every day.
Behind all of these activities are abilities that we did not create for ourselves.
The strength to wake up, concentrate, move, communicate, learn a skill, and complete a task is a blessing from Allah.
Work also teaches us lessons that cannot always be learned from books.
It teaches patience when results are delayed.
It teaches perseverance when difficulties appear.
It teaches us how to deal with failure, how to gain experience, how to improve ourselves, and how to continue after disappointment.
Through work, we gradually move from being dependent on others to becoming capable of supporting ourselves and, when Allah allows, helping others as well.
The Blessing of Provision
When a person works and receives an income, it is easy to think:
“I earned this because of my work.”
But our work is only a means.
Allah is the true Provider.
He gives opportunities. He creates circumstances. He opens doors. He brings people into our lives. He gives us ideas, abilities, health, time, and strength.
Sometimes a door opens unexpectedly.
Sometimes another door closes despite our efforts.
Sometimes we receive what we wanted.
Sometimes we wait.
Sometimes we work hard and see immediate results.
At other times, we work for a long time before seeing the fruits of our efforts.
Behind all of this is a wisdom that we may not always understand.
Therefore, when provision comes, we should not forget the One who made it possible.
And when something is delayed, we should not assume that Allah has forgotten us.
Perhaps what we wanted was not good for us.
Perhaps the delay protects us.
Perhaps another opportunity is being prepared.
Perhaps Allah is teaching us patience.
The believer learns to see provision not merely as money, but as part of Allah's wisdom and mercy.
Money Is a Blessing and a Responsibility
Money can be a great blessing when it is earned lawfully and used wisely.
Through money, a person can obtain food, clothing, housing, education, healthcare, transportation, and many other necessities.
Money can also allow a person to support parents, provide for a family, help someone in difficulty, give charity, contribute to beneficial projects, and bring comfort to others.
But wealth is not simply something to possess.
It is also a responsibility.
The question is not only:
“How much do I have?”
It is also:
“How did I obtain it, and how do I use it?”
A blessing becomes more valuable when it leads a person to gratitude, generosity, responsibility, and good deeds.
The Blessing of Independence
As we grow older, Allah may give us the ability to become increasingly independent.
We can move from one place to another.
We can make decisions.
We can choose a profession.
We can work.
We can earn.
We can plan for the future.
We can take responsibility for ourselves and, eventually, for others.
This transition is remarkable.
As children, we received much more than we could give.
As adults, we gradually become capable of giving.
We can support others.
We can solve problems.
We can teach what we have learned.
We can provide for a family.
We can help someone who is struggling.
We can become a source of benefit to other people.
But independence must never make us forget our dependence upon Allah.
We may become financially independent from other people, but we will never become independent of Allah.
We still need Him for every breath, every heartbeat, every opportunity, every success, every provision, and every moment of our lives.
We plan, but Allah determines.
We work, but Allah grants the results.
We search, but Allah opens the doors.
We strive, but Allah gives success.
From Receiving to Giving
There is something beautiful about this stage of life.
When we were young, someone else fed us.
Someone else clothed us.
Someone else protected us.
Someone else paid for our needs.
Someone else carried responsibilities for us.
Then, little by little, Allah gives us the ability to take responsibility for ourselves.
And eventually, we may become the person who feeds others, clothes others, protects others, supports others, and carries responsibilities for a family.
The hands that once received can become hands that give.
The person who once needed help can become a person who helps.
The person who once asked questions can become a teacher.
The person who once depended on others can become a source of support for others.
This is another immense blessing from Allah.
Provision Is More Than Money
When we think about rizq, or provision, we should not limit it to money.
Provision can include knowledge.
Health can be provision.
Time can be provision.
A useful skill can be provision.
A good relationship can be provision.
A safe home can be provision.
A trustworthy friend can be provision.
A peaceful heart can be provision.
The ability to help someone can be provision.
The ability to give can itself be a blessing.
Sometimes we discover that what we considered a small blessing was actually one of the greatest gifts Allah had given us.
Do Not Let Provision Cause Heedlessness
When a person becomes successful, there is a danger that success can make him forget the One who gave him the ability to succeed.
He may begin to believe that everything came solely from his intelligence, effort, qualifications, or talent.
But where did his intelligence come from?
Who gave him health?
Who gave him time?
Who gave him the ability to learn?
Who gave him the opportunity?
Who allowed his efforts to produce results?
Who protected him from difficulties he never even knew about?
The more blessings a person receives, the more reason he has to be grateful.
Success should increase humility, not arrogance.
Wealth should increase generosity, not greed.
Knowledge should increase wisdom, not pride.
Strength should increase responsibility, not oppression.
Independence should increase gratitude, not heedlessness.
A Life of Gratitude
At this stage of life, we begin to understand that almost everything we consider part of our own achievement is connected to blessings that preceded it.
Our education.
Our abilities.
Our health.
Our work.
Our opportunities.
Our income.
Our relationships.
Our skills.
Our time.
Our strength.
All of these are blessings from Allah.
We should therefore work, but remember Allah.
We should seek provision, but trust Allah.
We should pursue success, but remain humble before Allah.
We should earn, but remember that Allah is the Provider.
We should become capable of standing on our own feet, but never forget that every step is possible only by His permission.
O Allah, Bless Our Knowledge, Work, and Provision
O Allah, grant us beneficial knowledge.
Bless our work and make it righteous and beneficial.
Grant us lawful and wholesome provision.
Place blessing in what You give us.
Make our wealth a means of goodness, generosity, and benefit to others.
Bless our health, strength, abilities, time, and opportunities.
Do not allow success to make us forget You.
Do not allow wealth to make us arrogant.
Do not allow knowledge to make us proud.
Help us recognize Your blessings in what we receive and Your wisdom in what You withhold.
Give us patience when provision is delayed, gratitude when it arrives, and wisdom in how we use it.
Make us among those who receive Your blessings with gratitude and use them in ways that please You.
